Calculation Guide

Disclaimer: The Zakat amount provided is an indicative calculation specific to your Wahed portfolio's valuation as of a given date, based on the methodology approved by our Shariah Supervisory Committee (SSC). This calculation assumes your portfolio's original asset allocation at the time of assessment. Portfolio rebalancing, market fluctuations, or changes in asset composition over time may slightly affect the final Zakat amount. Additionally, other fiqh-based approaches may apply, considering factors such as completion of a full lunar year (Hawl), your personal financial circumstances, Nisab thresholds, or alternative scholarly views—any of which could ultimately influence your Zakat obligation. Therefore, while we offer this indicative calculation as guidance, we strongly recommend reviewing and understanding our calculation methodology, applying it according to your personal circumstances, and, where necessary, seeking advice from a qualified Islamic scholar or professional. For further information on how this calculator works and comprehensive details on Zakat calculation, please refer to this document. You may also consult the latest Zakat guidance fatwa issued by our SSC here.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does this calculator cover all my Zakat obligations?

No, it only covers the Zakat obligation related to your investments held within your Wahed portfolio.

How often should I calculate my Zakat?

Zakat is calculated annually, based on your Zakat anniversary date (known as Hawl).

How do I determine my Zakat anniversary (Hawl date)?

Your Zakat anniversary is the date your wealth first reached the Nisab threshold and remained above it for one full year (Hawl). (Interpretations may vary)

Why do I need to select an investment intention?

Zakat calculation differs based on your investment intention—investments held for wealth preservation (long-term) apply a 30% proxy, whereas short-term trading investments apply 100%, as advised by our SSC.

What's the difference between 'Trading' and 'Wealth Preservation'?
  • Trading (Short-Term): Equity investments bought specifically for frequent buying and selling, intending quick profits—fully Zakatable (100%).
  • Wealth Preservation (Long-Term): Equity investments bought primarily to hold and preserve wealth, without active trading intent—Zakat calculated using a proxy of 30% of the market value.
What is Nisab, and how do I calculate my personal Nisab threshold?

Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold for Zakat to become obligatory. Our SSC bases Nisab on gold (87.48 grams). We recommend checking the current market price of gold to determine your Nisab accurately. (Interpretations may vary)

Do I need to pay Zakat if I recently started investing?

Zakat is only obligatory if your investments have completed a full lunar year (or solar year, if chosen) above the Nisab threshold. (Interpretations may vary)

What if my portfolio value fluctuates frequently?

Your Zakat calculation should be based on your portfolio value on your specific Zakat anniversary date, regardless of subsequent fluctuations. (Interpretations may vary)

Why is there an option between Lunar and Solar calendars?

The traditional Islamic lunar calendar calculates Zakat at 2.5%. Some clients prefer the solar (Gregorian) calendar for convenience or financial alignment, calculated at 2.577%. For leap years (such as 2024), the solar rate slightly adjusts to 2.5775%

Can I pay Zakat directly from my Wahed portfolio?

No, you cannot directly pay your Zakat through the app or the portfolio. Zakat should ideally be paid from other cash sources or savings you have outside your investment portfolio.

Does debt affect my Zakat obligation?

Immediately payable debts may be deducted from your Zakat calculation. (Interpretations may vary)

Can I use this calculator if I have a custom portfolio?

Custom portfolios (available in selected regions) require manual calculation. Please refer to our Manual Calculation Guide for detailed guidance.

What if I'm unsure about any aspect of this calculation?

We strongly recommend consulting a trustworthy qualified Islamic scholar or professional for personalized guidance on your specific Zakat obligations.

Where should I pay my Zakat?

Wahed does not recommend specific organizations; however, we encourage you to carefully research and select a trustworthy and reliable organization capable of distributing your Zakat effectively to eligible recipients.

What is the difference between Zakat and Purification?

Zakat is an obligatory annual charity calculated at 2.5% of your eligible wealth, intended primarily for distribution to specific recipients like the poor and needy. Purification, on the other hand, involves cleansing your investments by removing and donating any incidental non-Shariah-compliant income (such as interest or impermissible earnings usually within a 5% threshold) to charity.
